Music Minds Matter release 2024 Annual Report

We know that a career in music presents challenges and unique pressures that can take their toll on mental health. Throughout 2024, issues related to mental health remained a key priority for us.

Through Music Minds Matter, we aim to ensure that anyone working in music has somewhere to turn to for mental health support and advice.

Our latest annual report outlines how we did this in 2024, and how we plan to reach more people this year.

“In 2024, the need for ongoing, dedicated mental wellbeing support continued at scale, with Music Minds Matter’s total direct expenditure on services reaching £1.0 million overall.” – Sarah Woods.

With a significant proportion of people in music working as freelancers, it is vital that Music Minds Matter offers everyone in music an independent place to reach out to. And in 2024, these funds went towards helping more than 3,000 individuals right across music find the help they needed, with over 5,000 interventions overall through therapy, helplines and peer to peer support sessions.

Working with BAPAM as our Clinical partner and Tonic Music, we grew our collective impact, creating supportive connections between peers and professionals to build and sustain positive mental health. In 2024, we received 1,572 calls to our 24/7 helpline and connected 183 people through powerful Peer Support Groups, run in partnership with Tonic Music.

Music Minds Matter’s online self-care sessions were attended by 602 people in 2024, providing those working in music with techniques and strategies to work through challenging times and equipping them with tools to use on an ongoing basis.

The Allies scheme also welcomed its first six organisations onboard in BIMM Music Institute, BPI (British Phonographic Industry), Featured Artist Coalition (FAC), Music Managers Forum (MMF), the Musicians’ Union (MU), and We Are The Unheard (WATU). As Allies, they have already begun helping us to improve mental wellbeing overall by ensuring the people in their networks are connected to the range of support available.

“Partnership is vital to our work and our new Allies initiative is working to connect everyone in music with the right support at the right time and we will continue to expand our breadth of partnerships in 2025.” - Bob Shennan, Chairman.

In 2025, we will continue to expand our network of partnerships and supporters and engage more Allies, advocates and partners to help us spread the word of our support, and the need to support us to reach more people with help.
